- Winning series exposes flaws and irregularities of the federal government’s program of Student Financing (FIES)
- Best Contribution to the Press honors the Brazilian Reporter
- ExxonMobil distributes R$123,200 in prizes
Today, ExxonMobil will announce the winners of the 60th ExxonMobil Journalism Awards. Paulo Saldaña, Rodrigo Burgarelli, and José Roberto de Toledo took first place with the work, FARRA DO FIES, published in the newspaper, O ESTADO DE S. PAULO. The series of articles investigated changes made to the program in 2010. In addition to interviews and document analysis, reporters cross-checked large databases, such as the Higher Education Census and the Transparency Portal, as well as records of more than 300 educational institutions. The effort revealed, among other aspects that had been concealed up to that point, that the program consumed R$28 billion in four years, putting students in debt, who will have a difficult time paying back the public coffers.
Apart from the primary award, there were 13 other areas considered, including the awards ExxonMobil for Reporting, Photography, and Television Journalism and 10 print media category awards. The Report received special tribute from the final awards committee with the distinction of Best Contribution to the Press. In a statement, the judges emphasized that “journalism depends fundamentally on the Reporter,” and that the honor extends “to the authors of the 1021 entries to the 60th edition of the award, to the thousands of former applicants from over six decades, and to those who will carry the Journalism flag forward.”
TV FOLHA received the distinction of Best Contribution to Television Journalism for the entry, BOYHOOD BOLSA FAMÍLIA, which stood out for having accompanied, for 10 years, families that depend on the social income distribution program.
The winners will be honored on November 12th at a dinner in Rio de Janeiro.
AWARD COMMITTEES
The Award Committee for the ExxonMobil Journalism Award 2015 that judged print media (not including photography) entries was formed by the journalists, A.P. Quartim de Moraes, Lucila Soares, Luiz Antonio Ryff, Maria Cristina Carvalho, and Plínio Fraga. These professionals were tasked with analyzing the 50 finalists and deciding the category winner, as well as the winners of the ExxonMobil Reporting Award and the primary award, ExxonMobil Journalism Award 2015.
The Television Journalism Award Committee included the journalists, Cristina Rego Monteiro da Luz, Denise Lilenbaum and Theresa Walcacer, who chose the winner from the 10 finalists. A special committee consisting of 48 photo editors from the main Brazilian vehicles and professional photography associations was in charge of selecting the winning photo for the ExxonMobil Photography Award, also from 10 finalists.
The various ExxonMobil Award committees, including a total of 85 judges, were responsible for selecting the finalists and winners after examining 1021 entries, including 512 print articles and series of articles; 151 photographic works; 284 graphic design works (Newspaper, Magazine, and Front Page), 71 television journalism entries, and three candidates for Best Contribution to the Press.
EVALUATIONS
The winning entries were submitted to a comprehensive analysis process between August and September, which was extended to October 15th. To earn the maximum distinction in each category, printed media reports were examined in three stages by three different committees. In total, 32 judges were directly involved in evaluating the print media entries, 48 judges for the photography finalists, and five judges evaluating the TV Journalism entries. The ExxonMobil Award, once again, used the online application and evaluation system.
Winners of the ExxonMobil Journalism Award, ExxonMobil Television Journalism Award, and the other 10 print media categories had their names chosen in meetings of the awarding committees on October 15th. The special photography committee chose the winning image after examining the ten finalists via the Internet.
ExxonMobil will distribute a total of R$123,200.00 in cash prizes.
TELEVISION JOURNALISM – REPORTING - PHOTOGRAPHY
The ExxonMobil Television Journalism Award was given to Rede Record for the story, AS ETERNAS ESCRAVAS, aired during the Repórter Record Investigação program with journalist Domingos Meirelles at the helm. The report exposed the slavery of children in the region near the Brazilian Capital District, the result of two months of investigation by the reporters Lúcio Sturm, Gustavo Costa, and Marcelo Magalhães. After the report was shown, a parliamentary investigation commission was created by the Legislative Assembly of Goiás to investigate the allegations.
The ExxonMobil Reporting Award was won by the journalists Cássia Almeida, Henrique Gomes Batista, Danilo Fariello, João Sorima Neto, Roberta Scrivano, Letícia Lins, Vivian Oswald, and Fernando Eichenberg, with the article, ANDA E PARA, published in the newspaper, O GLOBO. The series untied the knot of urban mobility in Brazil, highlighting the social impact of promoting the use of cars at the expense of mass transit. The calamitous situation of Brazilian public transportation was exposed as well as the brutal consequences of accidents, deaths, pollution, and how alternative means of transport are still incipient in Brazil.
The ExxonMobil Photography Award was given to reporter-photographer Dida Sampaio for recording the moment when President Dilma Rousseff exercised on her bike with background scene alluding to the corruption fighting operation known as Lava Jato.

BEST CONTRIBUTION TO THE PRESS
The Awarding Committee decided to grant the Best Contribution to the Press 2015 Award to the Reporter. The decision was justified by the statement that “journalism, on any platform from which it is exercised, in any way that it unfolds, depends essentially and fundamentally on the reporter. In times of doubt about which path to take, staff reductions and reduced budgets, this committee decides to bet on that one who will be responsible for the continuity and improvement of journalistic excellence. It thus honors the authors of the 1021 projects enrolled for this edition, the thousands of professionals who competed for the Award over these 60 years, and those will carry this flag forward.”
The TV Journalism Awarding Committee granted the distinction of Best Contribution to Television Journalism to Fernando Canzian, André Felipe, Leo Caldas, Mário Kanno, Renata Maneschy, Lucas Zimmerman, Rubens Alencar, Carolina Daffara, and Paula Reverbel, for the story, BOYHOOD BOLSA FAMÍLIA, aired by TV FOLHA.
